Many nonprofits start with an idea. Ours started with a problem.

Demand for in-home care is growing far faster than the workforce that provides it.

The aged population is expected to double to 90 million by 2050.

The benefits of aging at home are clear. With the right care, people can maintain greater independence, familiarity, connection, health, and dignity while remaining in the place they know and love. But for too many families, finding consistent, high-quality care at home is difficult.

And much of the problem comes down to the people we depend on to provide it.

Low wages

For years, caregiver wages remained low, even as the cost of living increased. Many compassionate, qualified caregivers simply couldn't afford to stay in the profession.

Too many clients, too few caregivers

As caregivers left the field, those who remained were stretched even further, asked to care for more people with less time to give each person the attention and companionship they deserve.

High turnover

Demanding workloads led to burnout and turnover. For clients, that meant frequently changing caregivers and losing the consistency and relationships that are so important to quality care.

OUR APPROACH

To provide better care, we care for the caregiver.

We believe excellent home care starts with people who are valued, supported, and invested in the people they serve.

That's why Saint Joseph is building a different model, one that brings together caregivers, missionaries, and volunteers to care for the whole person: physically, mentally, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually.

By investing in the people providing the care, we can help more people receive the consistent, compassionate support they need to remain at home.

The story that started it all

Meet Nancy

Nancy Hartings is one of the funniest, wittiest, hardest-working people you’d ever have the pleasure of meeting. She was in a car accident in July 1981 that forever changed her life. It was a long and difficult recovery. And while Nancy was never the same, she beat the odds and lived a rewarding and fulfilling life.

Unfortunately in recent years, her health declined and she moved into a nursing home, where it continued to decline rapidly. She wished to be with loved ones and family, and to be cared for in the comfort and familiarity of her own home.

Nancy's circumstances inspired the founding of Saint Joseph Home Health Care, to help more people receive excellent care while remaining at home and connected to the people they love.
